Modifying Die Cast Models
[Go to Photos]
Some die cast
makers are really doing a nice
job with racing subjects and
classic cars. We have looked
seriously at the arena of doing
modifications on these models to
take them out of the “toy” range
and turning them into viable
replicas.
For a long
time, we have had clients ask us
to change the color of a
particular die cast to match the
color of a car they owned as a
teenager, or that dad once
owned. Franklin Mint or Danbury
might have limited a 57 Chevy to
a black or red, and the client
has us strip it, and repaint it
in authentic GM colors to match
their memorable car.

With the
racing cars, we detail them to
look as though they have been
RACED. In the Porsche 917
photos, notice the “weathering”
effect. We add the oil and dirt
stains, torn duck tape, cracked
glass, etc. indicative of a road
warrior. We can also add engine
wiring and pluming and details
in the cockpit.
Whenever
possible, we use actual race
photos to make the car as
authentic as possible like we do
with our custom builds. The
917’s for example, have
‘yellowed’ side windows and
headlight covers, gunmetal
colored wheels (not black
plastic), scored brake rotors
and brass calipers, black
textured underpanels (instead of
the overspray of Gulf Blue or
Red from the die cast company),
oil stained engines and even
“blued” burned pipes.
Racecars
modified in this manner run
$150.00 to $250.00 depending on
the amount of detail specified.
Repainting “street cars” is
about $100.00 to $150.00
depending on the complexity of
the job. Contact us for
estimates. |
